Possible Errors & Troubleshooting

• Important: None of the error messages listed below indicate that the toner is defective. They simply mean that your printer's firmware is configured to work exclusively with original HP cartridges. These are firmware restrictions, not product faults.
• Legal notice: The information provided below is shared purely for informational purposes, based on steps that some of our customers have carried out in the past and reported as successful. Plutoos does not instruct, recommend, or take any responsibility for changes made to your printer settings or firmware. Any modifications you make to your printer are entirely at your own risk and your own decision. Please consult your printer manufacturer or a qualified technician if you are unsure.
• "Non-HP Chip Detected" – This appears when the printer firmware identifies a chip not manufactured by HP, usually triggered by a firmware update. Some of our customers resolved this by swapping the chip from their original HP cartridge onto the compatible toner, or by disabling the HP Cartridge Policy in the printer settings.
• "Cartridge Not Recognised" / "Install Cartridge" – The printer cannot detect the cartridge. Some customers resolved this by removing and firmly reinserting the cartridge until it clicks, and by cleaning the gold chip contacts on the cartridge with a dry lint-free cloth. It is also worth checking that all orange protective clips and sealing strips have been fully removed before insertion.
• "Supply Memory Error" / Error codes 10.00.12, 10.01.12, 10.02.12, 10.03.12 – Indicates a communication failure between the printer and the cartridge chip. Some customers resolved this by removing the cartridge, wiping the chip and the metal contacts inside the printer with a dry lint-free cloth, and reinserting firmly. In some cases, the chip was replaced or swapped from an original HP cartridge.
• "Incompatible Cartridge" / "Cartridge Not Compatible" – Often appears after an HP firmware update that blocked previously working third-party chips. Some customers resolved this by disabling automatic firmware updates and swapping the chip from an original HP cartridge onto the compatible toner.
• "Used or Counterfeit Cartridge Detected" / "Non-Original Cartridge" – A notification message only. Many of our customers simply pressed "OK", "Continue", or "Accept" on the printer display and continued printing without any further issues.
• "Cartridge Very Low" / Exclamation Mark Warning – Common when reusing a chip from an old original HP cartridge, as the printer remembers the chip as empty. Some customers bypassed this by pressing "Continue" or "OK" on the printer display to keep printing.
• "Supply Problem" – Usually caused by remaining orange protective packaging. Customers who encountered this resolved it by ensuring all clips, plastic tabs, and the sealing strip were fully removed before inserting the cartridge.
• Regarding HP Cartridge Policy and automatic firmware updates: Some of our customers have disabled these settings and reported that their compatible toners worked correctly afterwards. The steps they followed were:
  • Via printer display: Settings – Supply Settings – Cartridge Policy – set to Off; then Settings – Printer Update – Manage Updates – Allow Updates – set to No
  • Via HP Embedded Web Server (EWS): open a browser, enter the printer's IP address, go to Print – Manage Supplies – Cartridge Policy – set to Off
